The Oregon Outback is the southeastern portion of the state. It's a very remote, magical area that holds a very dear place in my heart. Here you'll find Steens Mountain (a 50 mile long fault block mountain that rises to a 9,733 foot peak elevation) and its gorges; the Malheur Wildlife Refuge and its ponds, marshes, and birds; the Pete French barns; the lava craters; the Alvord Desert, wonderful dilapidated buildings ... and family-style dinners at the Frenchglen Hotel.
