Carrizo Plain is one of my favorite places, a primitive and stark location that I find very powerful and has really gotten "under my skin". I've visited here four times, three of those in 2009, and recently in March of 2015. It's almost all gravel roads and primitive dirt back tracks here, and there's no services whatsoever - you must bring everything you need (there's not even water here), and take it out with you when you leave.

Bill Clinton signed this into being a National Monument as he was walking out the White House door in January 2001. There is a visitor center, but the hours seem to be sporadic, and cell phone reception is spotty at the very best. If you visit, come prepared! Oh, and the San Andreas fault runs right through here, you can see it and drive across it.
